Hattie Coppard is an artist whose projects involve assembling teams including writers, lighting designers, architects, horticulturalists, rope-makers and others. She has made temporary and permanent public art commissions all over the country, receiving wide media coverage. She is the Director of Snug & Outdoor, a company of artists whose work involves designing innovative play spaces which grow out of creative consultation with those who use them.

Current (2003) commissions include

EVERGREEN SQUARE PLAY LANDSCAPE, Hackney, commissioned by LB Landscape Architecture for London Borough of Hackney and Circle 33 Housing Association
Working closely with the landscape architects, our design for the play area in this new square includes a dynamic landscape of rubber-coated mounds and valleys, huge boulders and a poem written with local schools that appears in different guises throughout the square.

COWLEY TEENAGE SPACE, Lambeth, commissioned by Cowley Estate Management Board.
During a series of experimental design projects on the proposed site teenagers were able to try out ideas for their new space using temporary ramps, platforms, blocks, shelters and seating. To keep everyone informed we set up an interactive web-site. We are now in the process of finalising and costing the designs.

FOUR PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS, Camden. Commissioned by Camden Environment Department and Learning Through Landscapes.
Temporary experimental projects in the school grounds, involving the whole school community will lead to new playground designs and management.

Selected public art projects

THE MAIDSTONE SHEEP. An 8 ton sculpture made with 3000 flowering plants and an integrated irrigation system, standing on the High Street in Maidstone, Kent.

THE IMAGINATION STATION. A week long sound, light and video installation in a fish stall on Mare Street that investigated the sense of place that exists in the heart of Hackney.

WHITECHAPEL THREADS. A 5m high bronze sculpture commemorating the garment industry in this area of London and marking the entrance to Brick Lane Market.

THE BOROUGH BREATHTAKER. The all-over livery design for the Windsor and Maidenhead mobile library. We ran poetry and art workshops with four local schools exploring what a library is for.

THE HACKNEY CLOCKTOWER. A new clocktower and landscaping for the entrance to Hackney Central Station.
