Summary

The new war memorial for Islington Green in north London was commissioned from the artist John Maine by the London Borough of Islington. The project formed part of the upgrading of the Green, and replaced a “temporary” memorial which had stood on the site since 1918. It took two years to complete, from 2004 to 2006. The commissioning process required a great deal of sensitivity and extensive consultation, but even so was initially deferred by the Planning Committee. The implementation of the project was also lengthy and challenging, with the artist finally finding the correct stone to make the work at a quarry in China.
