The Young Vic

Summary

The redevelopment of the Young Vic Theatre by Haworth Tompkins architects was completed in October 2006 after three years of closure. Fine artist Clem Crosby was appointed in 2003 and worked closely with the architects and the Young Vic’s artistic director throughout the redevelopment. Crosby’s installation 180 monochromes is made up of 180 individual paintings in dark cadmium yellow on black hand-painted cement board encased in metal mesh grid. The paintings create an exterior skin to the main auditorium and when floodlit at night, the installation transforms the theatre and street views. Crosby also advised on the colour of interior walls and introduced a playful element by painting each of the lavatory blocks with intense colour and applied glass forms.
