Bristol Royal Hospital for Children

Summary

The new Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (completed 2001) encompasses commissioned artworks by over twenty artists, many of which are site specific or integrated within the fabric of the interior. The use of vibrant colour and the powerful presence of the contributions of visual artists are integral to the distinct identity of the new hospital.

In 1997 arts consultant Lesley Greene was commissioned to develop an arts strategy for the new hospital, which would both integrate art and colour into its interior design, and reflect the hospital’s commitment to consultation and the family. Lesley involved artists in an active research programme of residencies and commissions as an integral part of the feasibility stage. As a result, artists Ray Smith (Lead Artist), Eva Elsner and Annie Lovejoy contributed to the planning of the major commissions programme leading to significant input to the concept design stage of the hospital interior. An evaluation study of the impact of the hospital environment upon its users was also undertaken.

The continuing arts programme is managed by a part-time Arts Co-ordinator. Publications recording the hospital’s commissions and a guide to the commissioning process have been produced.
