Leeds General Infirmary

Summary

The case study features two commissions in 1997 and 1998 for Tonic, the arts and environments programme for the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Landscape photographer Kate Mellor was given a brief to produce images which would address high stress levels in patients in high dependency care. She explains her choice of images in her artist’s statement. The photographs are displayed in light boxes in the ceiling of the Day Case Unit at Leeds General Infirmary. Patient information has been produced to explain the project. An independent evaluation showed that the images had a measurable effect on the attention levels of patients and reduced levels of self-reported stress.

The Boardroom is a monumental, digitally-made photomontage by the lifts in the Jubilee Building at the Infirmary, which was created by a group of support staff from Property and Support Services in a project facilitated by Lisa Watts. The brief for the project was to raise the profile and hence the morale of support service staff. Feedback from those who took part and a survey of viewers of the work showed the project met many of its objectives.
