Strategy for Public Art in the Transportation Systems of Essex County
Council
Essex is one of the largest counties and is well served with strategic
transport links covering road, rail, sea and air. These together with
its proximity to London make it a prime site for investment.
A number of factors mean that the County will see further demands on
and expansion of its transport infrastructure in the near future:
- Stansted Airport is the fastest growing major airport in Europe
with projected further growth in passenger traffic in future years;
- The Thames Gateway initiative in south Essex proposes a large increase
in new residential developments and associated infrastructure;
- Both Harwich in the north east, and Shell Haven near Tilbury in
the south, have major dock expansions planned.
Essex County Council's Highways and Transportation
Group commissioned CBAT The Arts and Regeneration Agency to develop
a strategy for Public Art in the Transportation Systems of Essex County
Council. This is intended to complement the Essex Local Transpsort Plan
published in 2000, and the Essex Public Art Strategy adopted in 2002.
The Strategy for Public Art in the Transportation Systems was adopted
in 2005.
