Date uploaded: March 18, 2010

Renowned contemporary artists from across the globe are taking part in the inaugural Abu Dhabi International Sculpture Symposium (Adiss) which runs until April 7 2010.

The six-week symposium is being organized by Zayed University in collaboration with Salwa Zeidan Gallery under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahayan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE.

“Under the guidance of Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, president of Zayed University, the symposium is truly an exceptional event that marks an important historic milestone and is destined to transform the art and cultural sector in the UAE,” said Dr Sulaiman Al Jassim, vice president of Zayed University.

In its inaugural run, ADISS opens its doors to the world under the theme of “Bridging Societies through the Language of Art” and will bring together 17 renowned sculptors from around the world to reveal their creativity on site from the heart of the Abu Dhabi,” Dr Al Jassim said.

The Abu Dhabi municipality said the initiative highlights its objective to view the city as a 'new, unique art capital of the modern world and playing a key role in the social advancement of the capital.

The six-week symposium will run from February 25th to April 7th 2010 and will reveal the works of some of the most talented international artists who were carefully selected to give the Symposium a multi-cultural context.

Each artist was asked to submit three proposals for sculptures that were inspired by the U.A.E., its history, and its culture, and were also linked to the theme of ADISS: "Bridging Societies Through the Language of Art".

During the symposium, visitors will have the opportunity to watch the selected international artists at work, as they create the sculptures commissioned for Abu Dhabi.

At the conclusion of the Symposium, the new monumental sculptures will be permanently placed at selected public spaces throughout Abu Dhabi, which will complement His Highness Sheikh Mohammed's vision for a cultural city with artistic landmarks.
