Andy Kirkby announced as the Weymouth Gateway artist

Weymouth and Portland Council has chosen sculptor Andy Kirkby, from Moreton near Dorchester, to create a £60,000 piece of public art for a Weymouth Gateway site. The work will be installed at at a new business and retail development on Mercery Road in Weymouth.

Kirkby will set up a blog to enable people living in the area to feedback on his ideas for the artwork. The artist created the Sea Road Public Art Trail at Boscombe in Bournemouth with the help of people living there.

Kirkby said: "This initial creative engagement with local people has always been a vital part of my past projects. Public art should be just that - public, accessible and relevant to the location and its residents."
