Barnsley Community Solutions unveils three new public art commissions

Date uploaded: September 30, 2013

Barnsley Community Solutions have commissioned three new public artworks for Health Centres in Barnsley at Worsborough, Thurnscoe and Goldthorpe, with the projects managed by public art consultants, Beam. Each artwork has been developed in close consultation with the users of the health centres in which the works will be sited.

At Worsborough artist and weaver Jan Bowman has worked with local history groups, families and after school clubs to research different areas of Worsbrough. Text from this research has been printed onto ribbons and woven into a number of intricate long thin panels to be placed around the Health Centre.

In Goldthorpe, the 154 Collective created a series of works for the Health Centre including a three seater bench and a single seater throne, each said to have been frequently used by ‘the People Watcher’. The seats are adorned with words, phrases and statements reflecting the thoughts, hopes and aspirations of members of the local community. The work, which is a celebration of words, community and the power of stories will be installed, alongside a framed illustration and a commemorative plaque.

For Thurnscoe, the artwork has evolved from collaboration with the Health Centre and with local community groups, resulting in a film and a physical artwork which aims to show the positive attitude of the people in the village. Artist duo Broomhead’s Homemade said: “The artwork is a long landscape that undulates like the surrounding fields and is made from thousands of pieces of timber symbolising the coming together of the community, The work guides visitors into the Centre and offers a place to rest and think. We wanted to make something that is honest, proud and warm – just like the people of Thurnscoe.”

The launch of all artworks will take place on Thursday 3rd October 2013 at the times and locations listed below. The events are open to the public:
