Design Competition launched for a Memorial to the 6000 Lost Trawlermen from Hull

Six thousand trawlermen from Hull lost their lives during the last 100 years in the pursuit of their livelihood. Deep sea fishing was this country’s most dangerous industry and its impact on Hull’s communities was immeasurable.  Since 1989, the charity STAND (The St Andrews Dock Heritage Park Action Group) has worked to ensure that Hull’s fishing industry is not forgotten and that the high cost of people’s contribution to it is remembered and respected.

STAND’s vision for the memorial is that it will be a ‘special place’ to mark and preserve the memory of the thousands of Hull’s trawlermen whose lives were lost and their contribution to the life of the city and the nation. The site chosen in Hull for the memorial is on the water’s edge of the Humber, at St Andrews Quay, formerly St Andrews Dock from where so many trawlermen cast off from dry land to sail to the northern fishing grounds. STAND has raised considerable funding towards the cost of the memorial and the projected capital budget is £250,000.

STAND, with support from Hull City Council, has now launched a call for Expressions of Interest from which three competitors will be selected to enter a Design Competition for the memorial. Those shortlisted will be each receive an honorarium of £3000. The competition is open to individuals, design practices or teams of architects, landscape architects, artists and other professionals.

The deadline for receipt of Expressions of Interest is Friday 19th April 2013.
