Henry Castle wins major commission for Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail

Henry Castle has been selected to develop a major new artwork for the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail, due to be completed and open to the public in early summer 2016. Henry's proposal will respond to the people, history and geography of the Forest of Dean, using a process of enquiry to reveal hidden aspects of the place.
“My work responds to particular places in the landscape and it is a privilege to be invited to this unique forest as context and inspiration for making sculpture. Having made so many discoveries already about the history and the geology of this incredibly interesting place I am very much looking forward to spending a great deal of time in the forest during the coming year and seeing what other secrets it throws up, as the work moves forward.” Henry Castle.
Henry Castle will follow in the footsteps of artists such as David Nash and Cornelia Parker, who made artworks for the trail in the early stages of their careers. His recent commissions include a major permanent artwork for Jupiter Artland in Edinburgh and a series of works at Rubislaw quarry in Aberdeen.
To develop the new commission the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trust will work closely with the Forestry Commission, and will be supported by additional investment from the Arts Council England, EsmeĢe Fairbairn Foundation and Gloucestershire Environmental Trust.
