Passage: Invitation to the official artwork launch, Friday 19th July 2013

Date uploaded: July 4, 2013

Join the Two Tunnel Experience and celebrate the official launch of Passage – an interactive audio-visual installation in the longest walking and cycling tunnel in Britain. Experience Passage in the Combe Down Tunnel before hearing from United Visual Artists the producers of this new public artwork which has been made especially for this historical site.

Passage has been imagined as a journey where the artwork is constructed through the experience of travelling the Combe Down Tunnel, created by London based United Visual Artists and award-winning composer, Mira Calix.

Drawing inspiration from the historic railway architecture, an array of sound emitting objects has been positioned along the length of the tunnel to create a spatially distributed soundtrack. Invoking an old steam train’s light reflectors, these cast-iron ‘sentinels’ have been designed with a visual counterpart, reflecting the colour of the instruments.

The result is a soundscape formed through layering their individual musical textures, with the cyclist or pedestrian effectively taking on the role of the conductor as their speed and presence determines the composition and playback of the piece.

Passage is the latest public art commission for charity Sustrans, funded by Arts Council England, Sustrans and local fundraising by the Two Tunnels Group.
