Remember WW1 – 'Remembrance Field' by Carl Jaycock

Date uploaded: August 5, 2015

Remembrance Field is a large scale photographic art installation that commemorates World War I by artist Carl Jaycock. It is presented in St Mary the Virgin Church, Shrewsbury, from the 28th of July 2015 until Friday the 11th of September 2015.

The installation focuses on the 4663 individuals from Shropshire that gave their lives in WW1. Where possible the installation uses portraits of men and women from Shropshire and additionally is supported by images of other men and women from Britain who displayed great acts of courage and bravery during WW1.

The prints formed into tubes with the thousands of faces on them parody the shell cases that were made in their millions by munitions workers and this installation includes portraits of the women munitions workers from Hereford factories who made the shells during WW1. They were affectionately known as the ‘Canary Girls’ due to their skin going a yellow colour due to handling the chemicals when making the shells.

The installation wraps itself around the WW1 commemorative chapel and on closer looking reveals a few old original WW1 shells decorated with flower patterns and negated of their original use by the soldiers 100 years ago. This created what we now call trench art. The installation flows from the WW1 remembrance altar with original shells and finishes with 113 candles which are symbolic of all those unknown soldiers on the monuments of Shropshire.

Remember WW1 – ‘Remembrance Field’ will be accompanied by a free artist talk on Saturday 15th August about the installation and sharing an informal look his public/art practice.
