Urban meets Rural - A photographic project for empty shops in Plymouth

Date uploaded: April 29, 2009

As a result of the current financial climate Plymouth City Centre currently has a number of empty shop units.  As in many of our city centre’s it is anticipated that the number of empty shops will increase over the forthcoming months. Plymouth City Centre Company is keen to improve the appearance of the shop windows of these empty premises.  In the past the approach to this might have been through a generic graphic response but with the development of the public art work in the West End it is recognised by the City Centre Company that an opportunity exists for a different and more unique approach and it is therefore proposed that a more creative response is explored.

With a desire to demonstrate possibilities and build confidences in the potential for creative working in the West End and the wider city, this project is seen as a potential ‘quick win’, offering the City Centre Company the opportunity to work with stakeholders and demonstrate the impact that working with artists and creative professionals can have on the public realm within our cities.
