Barbara and Henry – The Musical

Date uploaded: November 11, 2014

'Barbara and Henry – The Musical' is an exploration of an imagined relationship between revered sculptors Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. It was conceived by the artist, Mel Brimfield, and the singer-songwriter, Gwyneth Herbert, as part of their Platform residency at Site Gallery, Shefield. The project will run from the 18th of November to the 13th of December 2014.

The artists will work together to devise a number of songs through scratch performances and open rehearsal and over the course of four weeks the gallery will become a theatrical set with costumes, props and backdrops emerging from packing crates and a piano at the heart of the installation.

Visitors are invited to drop into the gallery throughout this Platform residency to experience the musical in its development. Mel and Gwyneth will also draw together and share a whimsical archive including original historical documents alongside her own playful contributions, deliberately presenting fact alongside fiction.

Mel and Gwyneth will be giving a free lecture as part of this year’s Transmission programme, which is a collaboration between Site Gallery and Sheffield Hallam University. Taking place on the first day of their Platform residency, their talk offers early insight into the project.

18th November: Transmission lecture, from 4.30-6pm and drinks, 6.30pm

Visitors can join a member of the Site Gallery team to walk over to the university, meeting at Site Gallery reception at 4.15pm. For more information click here.
