Contemporary Art Society presents Orchard by Neville Gabie
Sneinton Market, Nottingham

Working with Nottingham City Council and Patel Taylor architects, the Contemporary Art Society appointed Neville Gabie as lead artist on the regeneration of Sneinton Market Square, Nottingham.

The resulting commission, Orchard, celebrates the planting of apple trees in the new square, intended for communal use and celebrating the market’s long history as a centre for food production and distribution. Gabie has also donated apple trees of 100 different varieties through his Apple Tree Adoption network to local residents, schools and community organisations of Sneinton and St Ann’s in order to create a diverse urban orchard spanning the east side of the city.

To celebrate the launch of Orchard on the weekend of the 9th December 2011 Neville Gabie and project curator Jennie Syson have invited Nottingham based artists Rebecca Beinart, Mathew Trivett and Oliver Dalby alongside writer and poet Wayne Burrows to join them in creating a varied programme of events to celebrate the planting of the apple trees. This programme comprises an exhibition at Surface Gallery; a symposium at Nottingham Contemporary; the launch of the new Sneinton Market itself; and a feast at Stonebridge City Farm.
