Dangerous Discoveries at Biddulph Grange Garden

Date uploaded: May 18, 2015

Biddulph Grange Garden is hosting a contemporary art exhibition in the garden, as part of the Trust New Art project. The Garden has commissioned five contemporary artists to create a contemporary arts exhibition, with the theme of ‘dangerous discoveries’. Featuring artists Rebecca Lee, Sarah Tulloch, Rebecca Beinart, Katy Beinart and Laura Youngson Coll, winner of the 2014 Perrier-Jouet Arts Salon prize.

The theme of ‘dangerous discoveries’ mirrors the concepts on which the gardens at Biddulph Grange were designed and built. These include the dangers of plant hunting in the Victorian era, unusual climates, trees of gigantic size and the exploration of uncharted territories.

This will be reflected in the artworks which include a series of structural installations based upon the Wardian case, a protective container much like a terrarium, designed for transporting plants around the world.  Other pieces include sound and light installations, as well as a piece of art created around the theme of orchids.

The Trust New Art project, supported by Arts Council England, aims to connect more people to the special places cared for by the National Trust through contemporary art and craft.

Assistant Curator Eleanor Heath says, ‘This is an exciting and prestigious project for Biddulph Grange after the media coverage of the garden on the BBC last year. We are expecting this exhibition to intrigue & delight our current audience as well as introducing this wonderful garden to new visitors’.

National Trust has been working with living artists since the 1980s, and in 2009 created Trust New Art through a partnership with Arts Council England. The programme makes contemporary arts available in National Trust properties; builds new and diverse audiences; and offers new opportunities to artists to work in new contexts.
