Katie Paterson: Second Moon

Locus+ are proud to announce Second Moon, a new year-long commission with Katie Paterson, that launches on the 8th September 2013.

Second Moon is an artwork by Katie Paterson that tracks the journey of a fragment of the Moon as it circles the Earth, via airfreight courier, on a man-made commercial orbit.

Second Moon launches from the British Science Festival in Newcastle upon Tyne on the 8th September 2013. It will begin a year-long airfreight journey, that will see it moving in an anti clockwise direction across the UK, China, Australia and the USA. Orbiting at approximately twice the speed of our Moon, Second Moon will orbit the Earth 30 times in one year.

Second Moon is visualised through an App that tracks the lunar meteorite in real time in relation to your location, the Moon’s location and the orbits of the other planets in our solar system.

Second Moon will be on display at the Great North Museum : Hancock prior to the commencement of its journey.
