Mark Vernon - The Dividing Line

Date uploaded: September 12, 2014

The history of Barne Barton and its relationship to the River Tamar by artist Mark Vernon will be premièred as part of an international Film Festival produced by The River Tamar Project. The film 'The Dividing Line' will be premièred at 7pm on the 2nd of October 2014 at Bull Point Rugby Pitch in Barne Barton as part of 'It's All About The River'' film festival.

Sound artist Mark Vernon worked with members of the community to explore the river and Barne Barton’s relationship to it. The Saltash Bridge, Kinterbury Creek, the Naval Estate and the Dockyards are all areas of particular interest; the river is what shaped Barne Barton’s past and future and gives it a unique history within the city.

This original film work, commissioned by Take A Part and River Tamar Project, combines audio commentary from residents, employees and academics about the area and its past overlayed with archival footage from the South West Film and Television Archives (SWFTA).  The oral histories provided the narrative, whilst the archival film provides a visual backdrop for the stories.

The film screening is an opportunity for the community to showcase and discuss their innovative Neighbourhood Plan process and the challenges the area faces.  There will be presentations of work around the River Tamar, access issues as well as a discussion with Christopher Balch, Professor in Geography (Planning) School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at University of Plymouth.

The festival opens on the 12th of Septmeber and runs for a month.  The festival opens in Calstock and Gunnislake, then makes its way down the River Tamar finishing in Plymouth in October with a screening of Apocalypse Now and the premier of 2014 BAFTA nominees John Akomfrah and Smoking dogs film, Tropikos.
