The Floating Cinema 2014: Extra-International

Date uploaded: May 19, 2014

UP Projects have announced that The Floating Cinema 2014 will present a summer programme of events entiltled 'Extra-International' and devised by the artist duo Somewhere (Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie). It will focus on themes of migration, and the interpretation of the UK, its culture and its people through the experiences of other nationalities.

Taking the waterways as a framework, the programme will also explore themes of transient cultures and the shifting context of the canals, rivers and seas both locally and internationally.

“London’s docks, canals and rivers have always been at the heart of this multi-cultural city and the Floating Cinema’s east end home is one of the most diverse areas in the world. The new ‘Extra-International’ programme celebrates this diversity both at home and with content from abroad with films, events, performances and tours celebrating waterborne communities around the globe.” Somewhere, 2014

Working in partnership with Ambulante (Mexico City), Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (Manchester, UK), and Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival (Jihlava, Czech Republic) the programme will showcase global film and cultural highlights with a special focus on Central and South America, China and Central and Eastern Europe.

The 2014 programme will also present newly commissioned work, with the third year of a Live Art Commission in partnership with Live Art Development Agency, as well as two year artist residency and a programme of commissioned talks and tours which continue to highlight the value of the waterways from ecological, heritage, political, cultural and social perspectives.

The Floating Cinema Education programme features the creation of a new environmental project in partnership with East London Science School and artist collective Guerilla Science, a series of creative workshops and commissions specially created for young people and a volunteers scheme.

The Floating Cinema is supported by The Legacy List, the charity of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in partnership with Canal & River Trust. UP Projects' Floating Cinema is part of the Portavilion programme of temporary pavilions and structures for London's public spaces.
