Walter Jack Studio: Woodland Colour. Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford

Walter Jack Studio creates furniture and architectural elements for indoor and outdoor public spaces buildings and landscapes. For Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford they have created Woodland Colour - a sculptural woodland of twenty identical arcs illuminated by twenty uplighters. The placing and the colouring of the arcs is informal – but highly contrived. Wherever you choose to stand – within or outside the ‘woodland’ – you will only see a few of the colours. The result is almost a conjuring trick and creates a change of mood as the whole space seems suddenly re-decorated in a different hue. Scattered blocks of raw oak add somewhere to sit and add a counterpoint to the vertical elements, a visual base to the pieces.

‘Whatever we chose to put in this central space would be experienced in the round – travelled around and seen from all sides. But we wanted to create a space within – and to draw people in. So this is a spectacle and an interior. And a surprise – a place worth exploring – a ‘play space’.
